محمد الخضر حسين فقيه وعالم لغوي ومصلح ديني، يُعتبر رائدًا من رواد الوسطية والتجديد في القرن الرابع عشر الهجري وأحد كبار شيوخ الجامع الأزهر. وُلِد عام 1293 هـ (1876 م) في قرية نفطة التونسية في أسرة علمية نبيلة، حيث تأثر بأبيه وخاله محمد المكي بن عزوز. انتقل إلى تونس العاصمة، حيث حفظ القرآن والتحق بجامع الزيتونة، حيث أظهر نبوغًا في العلوم العربية والشرعية. نال شهادة التخرج من جامع الزيتونة عام 1898م، وأسس مجلة "السياسة العظمى" عام 1902م، التي كانت أول مجلة عربية أدبية علمية في شمال أفريقيا. بعد فترة من العمل في القضاء، انتقل إلى دمشق كمدرس في الجامعة السلطانية، ثم إلى إسطنبول محررًا عربيًا في وزارة الحربية، وأخيرًا إلى القاهرة حيث بحث وكتب المقالات وعمل محررًا في القسم الأدبي بدار الكتب المصرية. حصل على الشهادة العالمية من الأزهر وشارك في تأسيس جمعية الشباب المسلمين. أثرى ساحة الفكر الأدبي والإسلامي بالعديد من المؤلفات، منها "نقض كتاب في الشعر الجاهلي" و"نقض كتاب الإسلام وأصول الحكم". تُوفي عام 1958م ودُفن بجوار صديقه أحمد تيمور باشا.
