The Wonders of Antiquities in Biographies and News, Part Three: I wrote down the events of the late twelfth century AH and the beginning of the thirteenth century, collecting some facts in general and others in detail. Most of these events were ordeals we experienced and witnessed, as well as some I heard from elders. I also added biographies of some famous notables, including scholars and princes, along with glimpses of their news, conditions, and dates of their births and deaths. I wanted to collect this information and format it into papers organized by year, to be an easy reference for researchers to benefit from.
عبد الرحمن الجبرتي، أحد كبار المؤرخين في التاريخ العربي والإسلامي، عاصر الحملة الفرنسية على مصر ودَوَّن وقائعها في كتابه الشهير "عجائب الآثار في التراجم والأخبار"، الذي يُعد مرجعًا هامًا لتلك الفترة. وُلد عام 1754م في بيت علم ودين، حيث كان والده من أعلام الأزهر الشريف. حفظ القرآن الكريم في سن الحادية عشرة، وورث عن أبيه ثروة كبيرة ساعدته في تحصيل العلم والترحال. تنقل في أنحاء مصر واتصل بعلماء عصره، مما أكسبه معرفة موسوعية. عند قدوم الحملة الفرنسية، بدأ في تسجيل أحداثها بدقة، مشيرًا إلى الأبعاد السياسية والاجتماعية والتنظيمية للجيش الفرنسي. بعد جلاء الحملة، عارض محمد علي باشا ورفض كتابة كتاب في مدحه، مما أدى إلى مقتل ابنه، فظل يبكيه حتى فقد بصره وتوفي بعد ثلاث سنوات.
